The Social, Political and Economic Event Database Project (SPEED)

SPEED is a technology-intensive effort to extract event data from a global archive of news reports covering the Post WWII era. It is designed to provide insights into key behavioral patterns and relationships that are valid across countries and over time. Within SPEED, event data is generated by human analysts using a suite of sophisticated tools to implement carefully structured and pretested protocols.

The Merriam Scholars Program

The Merriam Scholars Program was a program funded by the Merriam Endowment in which two faculty members, chosen by the Cline Center, were annual appointed as Merriam Scholars. Due to the terms of the Merriam Endowment appointments were limited to members of the Political Science faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Appointment as a Merriam Scholar provided the scholar an annual salary supplement of $10,000 and a research budget of $10,000.

The David F. Linowes Fellows Program

The David F. Linowes Faculty Fellows Program is made possible by a generous gift from the Linowes family. The Linowes Fellowship provides exceptionally promising tenure-stream faculty with opportunities for innovation and discovery using the Cline Center’s data holdings and/or analytic tools. Any tenure-stream faculty member at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is eligible to be considered for the Linowes Faculty Fellows program. Preference is given to those who do not already hold an endowed appointment.

Schroeder Graduate Fellowship Program

The Schroeder Summer Graduate Fellowship Program is made possible by a generous gift from William A. and Paul W. Schroeder. The aim of the program is to enhance the quality of rigorous research on topics that fall within on-going research programs at the Cline Center by helping graduate students in Political Science at the University of Illinois generate original and publishable research at an early stage in their graduate career.
