Data speaks volumes.
Can you tell what it’s saying?

"The Cline Center has an unmatched collection of data, information and documents and together with a highly refined research methodology it adds a level of scholarship to the work of Baker & McKenzie and the Public International Law and Policy Group simply not obtainable anywhere else in the world."

- Robert Deignan, Baker & Mckenzie

The Cline Center for Advanced Social Research develops next-generation data, tools and techniques that place the power of data analytics squarely into the hands of difference makers, whether in academia, business, government, or the non-profit sector. We provide new approaches for analyzing news texts at extreme scales in valid ways, so you can hear what the data’s telling you. The result? Insights, knowledge and understanding, with the potential to improve the well-being of people around the world.

Here are some of the capabilities that the Cline Center can bring to bear for your project or organization.

One of the Cline Center’s signature research projects is monitoring civil unrest globally over long spans of time. Over nearly a decade of development and with an investment of well over $1M, the Cline Center developed a unique hybrid human-machine system for extracting civil unrest event data from news coverage that allows civil unrest events to be documented with the precision of human analysis but at scales approaching fully-automated analysis.

The Cline Center’s Voyager webcrawling system continuously monitors over 5,000 news organizations around the world in nearly real time. Originally deployed in 2006 for wide monitoring of national, regional, and international news organizations publishing in English around the world, Voyager’s scope of operations now also includes deep monitoring of local news coverage within English-speaking countries.

The Cline Center has over a decade of experience in applying Natural Language Processing algorithms to textual corpora containing multiple millions of records. We work with pristine text as well as web-scraped text and text that has been extracted from images using Optical Character Recognition technology. We also have experience digitizing and extracting textual data from microfilm and microfiche records.
